It IS a slice of life show, that’s the genius of it, because all the other characters are terrified of the world going BONG if they don’t keep Haruhi under control, that means entertained enough that she doesn’t unmake reality but not entertained enough that she decides the world should be like a MMORPG (Which almost happens in the last season)
Endless eight was a masterstroke troll by the animators, Haruhi enjoys summer so much that everyone is trapped in a time loop and only the alien/robot girl is aware of it, informing them that they’ve gone through the same 3 week period over 50 thousand times.
The beauty is that the animation company decided to represent this by having the same episode (Newly animated with new camera angles and dialogue every time!!) 8 times in a row before the time loop was broken.
The fans whined like stuck pigs, but in the end the DVDs sold just as well. Which is why it was a masterstroke, also balls the size of cantaloupes on the part of the company, imagine a western studio trying to sell that one to the board of directors.
