All about “joshiki” (Common Sense) and the Japanese, negative aspects of this, and some thoughts on turkey

Unlike the U.S. or most of Europe, Japan is a very homogenous country, where people tend to consider themselves part of the same genetic stock despite the sometimes obvious differences in facial features and hair and skin tint due to the presence of Korean, Mongolian, Ainu, Russian and other blood in the veins of "pure" Japanese. Somehow this tradition of "one-ness" has amalgamated into the unifying body of knowledge known as joshiki, things that any reasonable Japanese person is expected to know. Just as all Japanese take it for granted that chrysanthemums are a flower reserved for laying on gravestones rather than giving to one's wife, as I accidentally did to her great amuseent, we foreigners often have our own joshiki that can seem alien to the Japanese. We have a friend who owns a company and once complained that he had rather a lot of debt, including several different bank loans at different interest rates. I made the obvious (to me) suggestion that he get one new loan at as low a rate as possible and use it to retire all the other loans, and this was the most brilliant idea he'd ever heard -- apparently no one thinks of things like that here. When it comes to saving for a rainy day, the common sense of many people is to put their money in the bank, even if it pays a paltry 0.2%, or a whopping .75% if you opt for a 10 year CD. I once tried explaining one American joshiki of investing -- that the younger a person is, the better it is to hold stocks, since you have more time to recover from any problems you run into -- to my conservative mother-in-law, who has never owned stock in her life because some people have lost money in stocks in the past. Suffice it to say that she didn't see the point I was trying to make.

While this Japanese tradition of most people being on the same wavelength is usually a positive thing, there are downsides, one of which I call the "tyranny of the majority." My wife made breakfast for me the other day, which included two eggs fried "eyeball" style (what fried eggs are called in Japanese) and several strips of bacon. "This is turkey bacon, right?" I asked her, and she gave me a sidelong glance at my sarcasm. While Japan is a great place, with warm and friendly people and many beautiful sights to see, it lacks some of the choices you'd expect to find in a wealthy, modern country, including any kind of healthier products made with turkey meat. Whenever I go back home to San Diego I bask in the many choices around me, from the variety of imported beers available in stores to authentic Rold Gold pretzels to delicious whole-grain breads, and bagels, oh those bagels. I drink skim milk most of the time when I'm back home, not because I like it, but because it's all but impossible to find here in Japan, a country where the majority has decided that milk should be thick and creamy, with 4.7 per cent milk fat. This can make it a challenge for people with special needs to live in Japan, for example vegetarians often have trouble finding food that is completely free of animal products. Before I started J-List, I worked for a few months at the local city office as a "Facilitator of Internationalization," basically helping other foreigners who needed help getting city services. The person who had been in the job before me had left early due to various frustrations that reportedly included not being able to drink anything, since everything from cola to green tea has caffeine in it, which was against his religion.

All of us at J-List wish everyone in the U.S. a warm and happy Thanksgiving on Thursday. This is one of those holidays that can be hard to follow when you're far from home, and it's quite common for our entire Thanksgiving to consist of a bucket of "Kentucky," as KFC is called here. It's possible to find frozen turkeys imported from Brazil (which contain guidance about how the turkeys were prepared in accordance with the laws of Islam, since they are also exported to the Middle East), although the bird we got last year was so small we had to modify the cooking instructions downwards. This year we've got a box of good American stuff like mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and of course pumpkin pie, but we've decided to substitute turkey with pollo a la brasa, spit-roasted chicken from our favorite Peruvian restaurant. While you're recovering from dinner, remember that J-List stands poised and ready to help you with any and all shopping needs this long weekend, and we've got thousands of rare and amazing products for the Japan-focused person on your list this year.

We've got an announcement for fans of our PC dating-sim games today: the upcoming Snow Sakura has been declared "Golden Master" and is now being duplicated, just in time for the start of winter (don't you love our timing?). This is a really special game of love and "H" in Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, in which you play Yuuji, an average Japanese youth surrounded by a circle of beautiful girls, Saki, Kozue, Rei, Misaki and Misato. Although you knew the girls when you were small, for some reason you can't remember much about those days, only that you made a promise to one of the girls under the magical Snow Sakura tree. The mystery is, which girl was it, and why did you forget? This game has it all -- great characters, a long story with lots of depth, hilarious comedy scenes and a huge number of beautiful "ero" game CG. You can still preorder it and get free shipping when it ships!

Here are today's "really cool products" that I've picked out for you, out of the 30+ new items we've added to the J-List sites. Finding the geographic center of American English, adventures in New Zealand with plenty of sheep, and getting complimented on chopstick use

One question I've been asked by my ESL students in Japan is, just where is "standard" American English located geographically? Most countries define a given region as the "official" dialect of their language, which is then used in textbooks nationally. In China the standard language is the Beijing dialect of Mandarin, in Italy its based on the regions of Florence and Tuscany, and in Britain it emanates from the twin pillars of "Queen's English" and the BBC. The "official" English used in the U.S. is a bit harder to pin down, and it's sometimes referred to as Standard Midwestern, since it tends to flow from that part of the country. In 1868, Japan's capital was officially moved from Kyoto to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo meaning "east capital," in imitation of China's cities of Beijing and Nanjing, the "north" and "south" capitals. This meant that the "standard" Japanese language changed from the colorful, intoned speech of the Kansai region to flatter, more robotic-sounding dialect of the Kanto Plain, something that Osaka hasn't quite forgiven Tokyo for yet. Like the U.S. and Great Britain, Japan does not have an "official' body to define its language is like the Acadmie franaise, and it's generally up to the publishers of the Kojien, Japan's answer to Oxford and Webster as the most prestigious dictionary, to bless new words by including them in its pages.

My son is back from New Zealand, and he had a great time there, doing homestay with a local family and getting to use his English a lot. New Zealand is a beautiful country, very similar to Japan if you take away 96% of the people, concrete and asphalt and add a lot of rolling hills and sheep, and the students loved it there. It's funny how social barriers can be laid low through the power of shared popular culture. For example, the kids Kazuki was staying with were into Yu-Gi-Oh battle cards, and since he had remembered to bring his collection with him, everyone immediately became fast friends, doing battle and comparing the English and Japanese cards. The students at my son's school generally learn North American English, and several of the kids in New Zealand commented on their "American" accents, something that no one from the U.S. would ever perceive. The kids at the school were interested to hear that Kazuki's father had gotten to meet Temura Morrison, the Kiwi actor who played Jango Fett and all the Clone Troopers in Star Wars episodes 2 and 3, at the Star Wars Celebration IV convention this year, and had in fact sung the New Zealand National Anthem to him. Sometimes I think that I might not be the most representative American my son could have had for a father...

Although Japanese kitchens are well stocked with spoons, forks and knives, most meals in Japan are eaten with chopsticks. Children usually learn to use chopsticks around the age of 4, when they start attending preschool, and this is quite possibly the first of many adjustments to the larger Japanese group that children have in their school lives. Every foreigner living in Japan knows the embarrassment of being told by a Japanese person hashi ga jozu ("you use chopsticks very well"). While one popular response is to compliment the speaker on their use of a knife and fork, I've found you can have more fun telling them okagesama de (oh-KA-ge sah-mah deh). This is a complex phrase which literally means "Yes, thanks to you," almost as if you had leaned how to use chopsticks from the person, even though you've never met them before. The phrase is a useful way of showing Japanese-style humility whenever someone compliments you on something, and since few would expect a gaijin to know it, it's fun to see their surprised expressions when you whip this phrase out. (If you're trying to learn to eat with chopsticks, we recommend the training chopsticks we have on the site.)

Thoughts on innovation and cameras in cell phones, the “next” Brad Pitt as an Otaku, and update on all those lovely fires…

Is teen heart-throb Zac Efron, the so-called "next Brad Pitt," an otaku? That's the question asked in a Japanese magazine I happened to come across the other day. Zac is getting a lot of press in Japan because of the popularity of the High School Musical films which made quite a splash here, and he's accumulated a sizeable base of screaming female fans. The article was especially interested in whether or not Zac's love of anime like Dragonball Z, Death Note and Evangelion qualified him as a bona fide otaku or not. Zac is quite taken with Japan, and whenever he's here he reportedly heads to Akihabara for some serious shopping. In a way I guess it's no mystery that Zac's name goes hand-in-hand with anime in the minds of Japanese fans, since he's named after one of the most famous mecha from the Gundam universe, the MS-05J Zaku, the backbone of the Principality of Zeon. The Japanese certainly are no strangers to cute male idols. Between the constant flow of new "boy talents" from the Johnny's Entertainment management agency and the current crop of South Korean male idols hoping to make it on Japan's lucrative idol circuit, Japanese fans have a place in their hearts prepared for Zac.

As in most other parts of the world, the cellular phone has taken root in Japan in a big way, and a lot of the innovations we now take for granted came about as a result of the stiff competition in the "keitai" (portable phone) market here. Take the humble in-phone digital camera, a feature that just about every unit sports nowadays. The first phone to feature a built-in camera was the Sanyo J-SH04, released back in 2000 by J-Phone, formerly Vodafone and now part of Yahoo Japan mogul Masayoshi Son's Softbank empire. This feature started the era of "Sha-Mail" (picture mail), allowing people to email 80x160 pixel postage stamp-sized pics to each other, surely a landmark in the progress of mankind. Which brings me to one more big difference between Japan and the U.S. -- patents and how they're used. While all modern countries allow for new ideas to be patented for a period of time so that the owners can realize benefit from their inventions, I've seen some pretty bizarre patent claims over the years, including individuals asserting "ownership" of the concept of the mouse click, a virtual shopping cart, and the hierarchial menu. Somehow, the Japanese manage to get by without these kinds of "patent wars," and it's very rare that the subject comes up at all. When Nissan comes up with a nifty new way to add storage space to a sedan, they don't try to patent it to keep Toyota from copying it, and when the first camera was put inside a phone, no company tried to get a own the concept of "A method for mounting a CCD censor in a communications device." Yet somehow, the Japanese economy seems to move along pretty well, with competition making sure the best products are chosen most often by consumers. I wonder what it is the Japanese are doing differently when it comes to patents?

Although my adopted country is always fun, I still have love my real home town of San Diego -- the beautiful weather, the laid-back attitude, being able to go to the beach in January. Unfortunately the warm Santa Ana winds that make California such a nice place most of the time to be are causing absolute havoc right now, as fires engulf hundreds of thousands of acres. San Diego has several fires still burning, and winds are still whipping the flames to incredible temperatures, causing tragedy for many and forcing a mind-blowing 300,000 people to be evacuated. Our thoughts are with everyone caught up in these events, and we hope things will start to turn around soon. While J-List's San Diego office isn't in danger, several of our employees are affected by the flames, including two who can't get to work because of closed roads. We're striving to make sure any delays in shipping products are minimal while firefighters get the flames under control, and we thank everyone for your understanding in advance.

The next Prime Minister of Japan is decided, more thoughts on how the Japanese keep their politics peaceful, and things to do in Tokyo

Well, the race for the leadership of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party is over, and the calm, moderate Yasuo Fukuda has emerged victorious. Japanese leaders need to be consensus-builders, and when LDP politicians compared the calm, steady Mr. Fukuda (71) to his younger, more fiery colleague Taro Aso (66), it didn't take long for them to decide which was the safer choice, even if Fukuda does look like a parody of a Japanese salaryman complete with "bar code hair." While I was hoping for avid anime and manga fan Aso to be chosen -- I can just see the cabinet appointments he'd have made, with Rumiko Takahashi and Katsuhiro Otomo heading up the various government ministries -- I guess I can't fault the lawmakers' logic. Mr. Fukuda happens to be from J-List's home prefecture of Gunma, the fourth Japanese leader to emerge from our sort-of rural, sort-of urban part of the country, and it's no small point of pride here to have so many Prime Ministers springing from this humble land. Mr. Fukuda has promised to continue to support the U.S. in its current operations and work for better ties with China and South Korea. To that end, he's agreed to refrain from visiting Yasukuni Shrine, a private Buddhist temple in Tokyo where thousands of Japanese soldiers are interred, including some of the primary war criminals. That alone will be a refreshing change.

Fukuda
The new Prime Minister is famous for cracking jokes

It was interesting to compare the process by which Japan's next leader was chosen with the way that parties pick candidates back home. There can be a lot of political blood shed between candidates vying for a nomination in the States, yet the two hopefuls for the top LDP job avoided any negativism whatsoever in their statements, speaking nothing but words of praise and respect for each other as they slowly worked to win the trust of their party. One impression I had was that very few people seemed to be involved in the process, with most discussions going on behind closed doors -- which is one of those sho ga nai (it can't be helped) areas of Japanese politics, I guess. One of the words batted around this time was "thoroughbred" (the Japanese sounds funny, サローブレッド, "saro-breddo"), indicating the long history both Mr. Fukuda and Mr. Aso have had in politics, being the son and grandson of former Prime Ministers, respectively. This mattered enormously to the political establishment in this country where true outsiders and political mavericks are few and far between.

I often get asked by readers who are coming to Tokyo for a visit what they should do while here. While the Kanto region of Japan pales in cultural significance to the greatness of cities like Kyoto, Nara, and Himeji about 400 km down the Shinkansen line, there is plenty to see and do here. Tokyo has a lot of beauty to be found, and shrines like Asakusa and Meiji are popular with foreign visitors, or else take a stroll through Ueno Park and check out the many museums found inside. Shopping is always a fun activity, and there's plenty of good things to buy here, from high-end department stores all the way down to the shopping streets of Ameyoko, which grew out of a black market during the occupation of Japan. There are some good short day trips out of the Tokyo region, including the lovely town of Kamakura, home of the second largest Buddha statue in the country; and Nikko, a breathtaking collection of temples and shrines and a 5-story pagoda. Being from San Diego, I've always felt an affinity for our sister city of Yokohama, and that city is definitely great for doing some sightseeing, especially the Chinatown area. Part of the fun of visiting Japan can be going to places you've seen in movies, manga or anime, such as the Shibuya 109 building, or the inverted pyramid of Tokyo Big Sight, or Tokyo Tower, the scale replica of the Eifel Tower featured in dozens of anime series. If you're ever looking for a hotel in Tokyo, I always recommend the Mets Hotel Chain operated by JR, a convenient and modern chain of hotels built into major train stations for extra convenience.

Japan as a “Matrix of Strange English,” on the strong-willed (and unattractive?) women of our prefecture, and language error “best hits”

Nihon is, of course, the home of funny English. It's everywhere, like a bizarre Matrix of Strangeness that pervades the very air around a foreigner living in the country, despite the inability of Nihonese people to perceive it. You can see funny English when you look out your window and there's a big truck with DUCK! printed on the side, or when you go to shave and notice that your shaving cream says "shake a can well," or when you visit the public bath and notice that the air conditioner is called "Clean Poo." You can feel it when you address a letter to a friend who lives in an apartment building called "Maison Cream Soda"... when you go to a coffee shop that advertises "flavorous and delicious communication"... when you crack open a beer and notice that it contains "esteemed quality with fine barley, malt, aroma hop and natural water." Often funny English comes from marketing products to people, like the Paradise Hair Resort I happened across the other day, or the famous Pocari Sweat, designed to elicit the image of light clouds on a hot day (pokkari is a Nihonese word that describes floating on air). Sometimes the funny English in question isn't even made up of words, as in the case of a shirt I saw the other day that featured the famous "I (heart) NY" design, with the heart replaced by the GOP Elephant for no reason that we could comprehend. The Nihonese are unique in that they generally learn a lot of English grammar and vocabulary -- important for passing college entrance exams -- but since it's such an isolated country, there's no real need for the language in day-to-day life. I guess is what leads to Nihonese wanting to display English in so many peculiar ways.

Paradise Hair Resort

Women from J-List's home prefecture of Gunma have received a slap in the face from an article in the weekly magazine Shinkan Shincho which asked readers to rank females from Nihon's 47 prefectures according to beauty -- and they came in last. Each part of Nihon is famous for something, whether it's soba noodles from Nagano or white rice and sake from Niigata or "Akita Bijin," the beautiful girls from frigid Akita Prefecture, whose skin is so white because it's too cold to go outside most of the time there. Gunma is famous for several things too, including yaki-manju, bread-like cake that's coated with sweet miso sauce and cooked on a stick; daruma, those red round little things that bring good luck to your home or business; and really strong winds in the winter called kara-kaze (empty winds). Rather than being renowned for their beauty, Gunma's females are famed for being extremely strong-willed, usually able to make their husbands do what they tell them to. These bossy Nihonese females are known as kakaa-denka (kah-kah-ah DEN-kah), and this concept is such a staple of life in Gunma that there is -- I am not kidding -- a shopping street in our city called Kakaa Town where all the strong-willed housewives supposedly do their shopping. There are some theories about how Gunma women got to be so forceful, including the lack of a fishing industry in land-locked Gunma and the early growth of a silkworm cultivation which placed women in the role of primary breadwinner of the house. Or according to another theory, the strong winds caused women have to yell really loud to be heard, which made them lose their feminine characteristics.

Making errors when speaking a foreign language comes with the territory, and smart language learners will do what they can to embrace their own screw-ups as a positive way of moving forward with their language studies. At the very least, it's important to avoid being so scared of making an error that you never open your mouth, which is a problem a lot of Nihonese learners of English have. Wanting to avoid linguistic slip-ups, they prefer to pre-load their "brain cache" before speaking rather than just opening their mouth and letting the words fall out naturally. I've made plenty of large and small errors over the years, for example there was the time I confused the word hinan (to evacuate) with hinin (to use a contraceptive) in mixed company, and the standard problems of the word "mango" and a similar term that refers to the female reproductive parts, but everyone can make errors. Before I married my wife, we were planning what photographs we wanted taken at the wedding, and she kept asking us to take pictures of her standing on "the glass." I couldn't understand what she was saying -- did she want a picture of herself standing on a reflective surface while wearing her dress? -- but it turned out she was talking about the grass lawn in front of the chapel in San Diego. Poor Jun, J-List's toy-and-snack buyer, had an embarrassing experience, too, while in Chicago ordering espresso from a Starbucks. The coffee was very bitter, so he shouted niga! (nii-GA), which means bitter in Nihonese. All in all, this wasn't the best thing to shout in the middle of a coffee shop in Chicago, considering the potential for misunderstanding. (A more standard word for bitter is nigai, "nii-GA-ee"; niga is a slang form of this word.)

Since J-List is physically located in Nihon, we're able to bring many amazing products to fans all over the world, and our revolving monthly magazine subscriptions are among our most popular items. Today we're posting two new "Reserve Subscription" magazines for our otaku brethern, the popular Dengeki Maoh super-thick monthly manga magazine, and Dengeki Hime, a great mag about Nihon's oh-so-cute japanese animation characters with just a little bit of "H." Both are loaded with free stuff in each issue, from posters to mousepads and more. As with our other magazines, you can always get them on a month-to-month revolving basis, which means you can quit or switch from one magazine to another at any time, and there's never any obligation. (You can also pre-pay for a year's worth of issues and get one month free.) Why not give Nihon's most famous japanese animation, fashion, toy, hobby or men's magazines a try today?

One of the most famous products J-List has ever sold would have to be the Hello Kitty Vibrating Shoulder Massager, a licenced Sanrio product for easing tension in the neck muscles (what else?). Now this cult favorite is back again, in the form of a great new Hello Kitty x Rody battery-powered massager that's just the ticket when you or someone near you needs release from stress. It features Hello Kitty wearing a "kigurumi" (full body and head costume) of Rody, her horse friend. There are six colors in the set, and all feature a strong massaging motor and easy to access switch, with a battery that's fully replaceable. Get just the color you want or collect the entire set!

Thoughts on flying to Japan, comparing sports and sexy waitresses, and more oddities of written Japanese

Well, I've completed my return journey, and am safely back in Nihon. Whenever people hear I'm flying across the Pacific they usually assume it's a really horrible experience, however I'd say it can actually border on pleasant. With the amount of entertainment choices available to me as a modern traveler, from the new Harry Potter book to my MacBook loaded with games and movies to the shiny new iPhone I couldn't resist buying (I'm very happy for that "prepaid" hack that lets you use the phone without signing up for the two year contract), I was doing just fine. Since there are no connections involved, it's a lot more convenient flying to Nihon than the three planes I had to take when traveling to Baltimore, for example.

It's funny how some of the differences between Nihon and the U.S. turn out not to be all that different at all. For example, when I first got to Nihon it seemed peculiar to me that sports teams were usually named after companies instead of cities, e.g. the Yomiuri Giants, named for the giant Yomiuri newspaper company, or the Hanshin Tigers, owned by the Hanshin (which means "Kobe and Osaka" in case you were curious) railroad line. But after proper reflection, is this custom really any different from the trend of American stadiums being branded with corporate names, like Qualcomm Stadium and Petco Park in San Diego? Not really. Nihon is certainly a country that has a different dynamic at work when it come to sex, and I've met gaijin in Nihon who were less than happy about restaurants like the famous Anne Miller's that have built a name for themselves around extremely attractive waitresses dressed in sexy "push-up" waitress uniforms. And yet, this really isn't any different than what you can see at any Hooters or similar places in the U.S. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the core idea for the Anne Miller's uniforms (roughly equivelent to the Playboy Bunny in terms of general cult status here) were directly "inspired" from the classic St. Pauli's Girl from the beer ads, since they look very similar.

I talked last time about words like meganekko (眼鏡っ子), a word which means "girls with glasses" and which is pronounced "meh-ga-neh-KKO," with a short pause where the double "k" goes. When properly written in hiragana, the "basic" writing system of Nihonese, this short pause is called a "small tsu," essentially the kana character read "tsu" written at half size (i.e., っ as opposed to つ). Linguistically it's called a glottal stop, and while many languages have them, it's peculiar to find a language that has a written character for the sound. Usually expressed in the Roman alphabet with double consonants, some words that have this brief pause include gakkou (gah-[small pause]-KOH, school), nattou(nah-[small pause]-TOH, fermented soybeans) and matcha (mat-[small pause]-CHA, green tea). For anyone interested in learning to read Nihonese, one reason I recommend textbooks or flashcards that only feature hiragana, katakana and kanji as opposed to romanized Nihonese is, forcing yourself to learn the actual characters that the Nihonese use not only helps you learn to read better, it also helps your Nihonese pronunciation, since the rules of English (like silent 'e' and all that) will only trip you up when trying to pronounce words correctly.

150,000 fans later, learning about Japan through the kanji for “child,” and comparing movies between Japan and the U.S.

Well, one weekend and a staggering 150,000 people later, the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con is past. It was a wild show, and we handed out an estimated 12,000 J-List tissues to people who came by to say hi. If you were one of them, thank you! Now I'm headed back to Nihon, and it will certainly be good to be home, although our "reform" (remodeling) work is still proceeding, which means the house is likely to be a bit torn up. I'm leaving the kids behind to get their annual concentrated dose of English, as they attend various summer camps -- Girl Scout and Skating Camp for my daughter, Chess Camp and a fun camp where they explore various parts of San Diego for my son. They'll probably come back speaking better English than they speak Nihonese again this year...

It was a real rush, having so much going on during the convention. I was extra-busy because in the evenings I was trying to see all the great movies playing in theatres here in the U.S. with my kids before it was time for me to jaunt back to Nihon. We went to late showings of Harry Potter on Friday and the Simpsons Movie on Saturday, and both were great. As usual, I can't go out the door without seeing something to compare between Nihon and the U.S., and the trips to the theatre were no different. My kids were surprised to see that, in both films, the audience was very active, laughing at jokes and applauding at every turn, barely able to sit still. Compared to the silent, passive way that Nihonese audiences take in movies, it was like a night at the Rocky Horror Picture Show. They were also amazed that there'd be anyone else in the theatre past 7 pm. In Nihon, movies are usually watched in the afternoons, and almost no one goes to the movie theatre late at night.

Everyone remembers firsts, like that first time on a bicycle, or the first time you kissed a girl or boy. I remember the first kanji character I became aware of from trying to puzzle out written Nihonese. The character was ko (子)which means "child" (an alternate reading is shi), and it's most commonly found in names of Nihonese girls, like Keiko, Ayako or Sachiko. It's quite a flexible word, being found in scientific words like denshi (電子, child of electricity, i.e. an electron), or genshi (原子, child of origin, or an atom). Most "baby" names of animals can be made by putting ko in front of the name, like koinu (koh-EE-noo) for puppy, and if you're an astute fan of the classic japanese animation series Macross, you might have noticed that the Zentraedi alien Miriya has a baby they call Komiriya -- a great little joke. there. The "ko" word is often used to delineate a group of people, for example Edokko (江戸っ子, eh-doh-KKO, with a small pause at the double consonant), a label worn proudly by families who have lived in the Tokyo area since the days when it was named Edo, or kagikko (key child, 鍵っ子), the Nihonese term for latchkey kid. My wife was a misekko (店っ子) or "shop child," a child whose parents ran a shop and were thus too busy to play with her or take her places, which is why she watches so much television, she tells me. You can see the kko ending in the labels of many otaku-related concepts, like meganekko (meh-gah-neh-KKO, again with the pause), meaning cute girls with glasses, or burikko (boo-REE-kko), the annoyingly cute way that Nihonese girls act like helpless children as a way of charming men into doing their bidding.

Remember that J-List specializes in "wacky things from Nihon," like our totally awesome "ninja boots," which are authentic rubber-soled boots with the split toe that were really worn by ninjas in ancient Nihon, and more recently by carpenters and other professionals who sometimes need extra balance when walking on wooden beams, which normal shoes can't provide. Our tabi boots are available in various sizes, and instructions on how to measure your feet are given.

If you haven't been to Comicon yet, you haven't been to a really huge convention. Basically, they have everything imaginable there, from comics to Star Wars to japanese animation to Asian film and even peculiarly awesome stuff like the covers of romance novels from decades past.

On Thursday I took the kids to see a live performance of Star Wars music. It was pretty fun, especially the Yoda Ventriloquist Dummy guy.

Cool "Battle Damaged" Storm Trooper here.

Costumers were everywhere, although in truth, the cosplay is nothing compared to Anime Expo, mainly because of the high number of "normals" at this show.

Domo, Domo-kun. More updates and pics when I get back to Nihon-land...

Peter’s rant about “baka-gaijin” (with apologies to Chris Rock), thoughts on Japanese having an “American accent” and getting ready for Comicon!

Like every nation, Nihon has a segment of people from other countries living there, although at just 1.5% of the population or so, it's a much lower number than most other parts of the world. Naturally, not every Nihonese person is 100% happy about having foreigners disturbing the "wa" of society by doing things that are unexpected, and sometimes downright rude. There can be friction between foreigners, too: "lifer" types like me, who think living in Nihon is great, don't always get along with the small number of foreigners who are sometimes negative about the country they're living in, which we'll refer to here as baka-gaijin for the purpose of this post. And let me tell you, everything Nihonese people don't like about baka-gaijin, reasonable foreigners like me really don't like about baka-gaijin. You can't do anything around baka-gaijin. Can't sit around your favorite beer vending machine talking to people who stroll by on summer evenings, cause ignorant-ass baka-gaijin are peeing behind the machine, causing the owner to cart it off in disgust. Can't attend a Nihonese wedding, because the other stupid gaijin that got invited brought a toaster instead of the $200 cash gift that Nihonese manners require. (I was so embarrassed I paid his fee myself, and I didn't even know him.) You want to hide your money from a baka-gaijin? Hide it in a Nihonese textbook, cause baka-gaijin don't study Nihonese, even though they may live in the country for many years. And you know the worst thing, the worst thing about baka-gaijin? Thinking that the rules of society don't apply to them just because they're different, or because they don't speak the language. Thinking they can ignore paying that traffic ticket they got, or that it's okay to cut in line when waiting for the train, and so on. (Incidentally, if you consider yourself a sometimes baka-gaijin, we've got a awesome T-shirt to link to...)

I joke (with apologies to Chris Rock, whose monologue I'm parodying) about other foreigners who I encounter in Nihon, of course, but sometimes I do get frustrated. Being American, I tend to associate with Americans, Canadians and various English speakers from Europe, but people from any country can violate the rules of what is polite or good sense when living in another country. I once met a gaijin who was playing in a band with other foreigners. Since he was a musician, I thought I'd recommend some of the JPOP bands that I liked and make a CD for him, so he could start to take an interest in the music of the country where he would be spending the next year (at least). He declined my offer, though, saying that Nihonese music was "the worst thing in the world" even though he hadn't tried to listen to it at all. There was another foreigner I knew who didn't realize that some jokes that might be funny in English didn't translate so well into Nihonese. He made a pun about a girl we knew, essentially substituting the onomatopoeia pera pera (meaning "fluent at a foreign language") with pero pero (roughly, the sound of licking), which resulted in an extremely rude insinuation about the region of the body that the girl liked to lick. A lot of the negativism I saw in other foreigners game from teachers in the JET program, a government program that hires native English speakers to teach in Nihonese elementary and junior high schools around the country. JET teachers would often hang out only with other JETs, venting about some of the problems they encountered living in Nihon to each other, which served to reinforce negative feelings and keep everyone from learning anything fun or useful about their host country. (This is partially why, in my overview of teaching ESL in Nihon article, I say that if you're going to do JET, take at least two years of Nihonese and take the CIR path instead, facilitating understanding between the teachers and the Nihonese side of things, learning the local language, building connections for the future, and so on.)

The Nihonese study a lot of English, usually six years for most high school graduates, and up to ten years for college graduates. By and large, they've chosen to standardize on American English and spelling (e.g. "color" instead of "colour"). When a friend of mine went to Australia for a homestay, everyone at her new host family exclaimed "You talk like an American!" (which is funny, since most North Americans would not be aware of any "American" accent underneath the Nihonese one). English is spoken all over the world, of course, and the Nihonese do their best to cover other dialects of English -- NHK, Nihon's version of the BBC, has alternate English conversation shows on TV, including lessons in the "down under" dialects. In one textbook a junior high school student of mine had, there was a story about a girl who went to study English in Australia. She was terrified when someone told her "It's a good day today" because it sounded to her like they were saying "it's a good day to die." As they get out into the world and actually use English, I'm sure that most Nihonese eventually learn there is no such thing as a true "baseline" version of the language, something I was reminded of in Baltimore, where many of my customers spoke dialects ranging from Georgian to New York to Bostonian and even the local Baltimorese (yes, there is an official dialect called that).

The San Diego Comic Convention is right around the corner. If you haven't attended this massive comic book, SF film, animation and art convention then you really should -- it will blow your mind, it's so huge. We'll be busy beavers tomorrow, setting up our display and preparing all our stock for the 100,000+ people who will be coming by. If you're going to be at the show, make sure to head for the 100 aisle, also known as "japanese animation alley." For all those who can't attend, we've got a little gift for you: free shipping (or half price shipping for international) on English dating-sim games while the show is on. This means it's a great time to pick up a game or four, and save!

Here are today's "really awesome products" that I thought were especially noteworthy. Note: the J-List links below may be for adult products and should probably be considered "NWS." To see all the J-List products, check out J-List or the JBOX.com updated products link.

More pics from Otakon for joo. It's funny how trends among young people are always in motion. Once we stopped being shocked by body and face piercing and tattoos, they went on to contact lenses that made them have cat eyes, or in the case of this girl, seeming just one eye (the other one is pure black).

Good ariel view of the main crowd area at Otakon. Nothing says "happening East Coast japanese animation convention" like this pic.

I attended the 4chan panel, since I am the sponsor for the site. It was wild, far too wild to post about. It was essentially like going to see Rocky Horror for the first time, all over again. Yes, that's just about what it was like.

This dude was dressed up like a giant Wii controller.

It being the East Coast, there were a lot of black people there, at least a lot more than there are in Nihon, or San Diego. They seemed fascinated by the Black Black caffine gum we were selling, for some reaosn.

Time to go home. Honk if you like Naruto.

One of the awesome things about traveling is, you get to see things they don't sell back where you are from. Like McDonald's McDVD McRental.

It was time to go home. But how could I go home without sampling the Maryland Crab Burger?

You know, if you have had a long day I really recommend a tall glass of Blue Moon. This is totally my favorite beer in the world after that show.
